Africa is on the brink of an energy revolution that could redefine its economic future and place it at the forefront of global decarbonisation. President Cyril Ramaphosa has revealed that the continent’s growing Green Hydrogen sector is expected to generate up to four million jobs by 2050, unlocking unprecedented industrial and economic opportunities.

In a bold address delivered in Cape Town, the South African President positioned Africa as the next global powerhouse in clean energy, leveraging its untapped solar and wind potential to produce Green Hydrogen at scale.

“Green Hydrogen offers a pathway to combine Africa’s mineral wealth with clean energy to decarbonise heavy industries,” Ramaphosa stated.
“This approach not only mitigates climate risks but also stimulates cross-border investment and inclusive growth.”

Green Hydrogen, produced through electrolysis using renewable power, is gaining recognition as a clean alternative to fossil fuels, particularly for carbon-intensive industries such as steel production, shipping, and chemical manufacturing. Unlike traditional hydrogen production, the green variant generates zero carbon emissions, making it a critical pillar in the global shift towards net-zero.

The momentum is already evident. Over 52 large-scale Green Hydrogen projects have been announced across the continent. Through the African Green Hydrogen Alliance, countries such as Egypt, Namibia, Kenya, Morocco, Mauritania, and South Africa are working together with the ambitious goal of producing 30 to 60 million tonnes of Green Hydrogen by 2050.

Ramaphosa emphasised that realising this vision requires more than technology; it needs strategic investment and cooperation.

Experts believe Africa’s emergence as a Green Hydrogen hub could shift the energy balance globally, positioning the continent as a clean energy exporter, while driving inclusive growth, infrastructure development, and climate resilience.

As climate change accelerates the demand for alternative fuels, Africa’s Green Hydrogen journey stands not only as a solution to environmental challenges but also as a catalyst for long-term prosperity.
