Bboxx Nigeria to bring solar power to 90 million Nigerians still living without reliable electricity.
In a bold stride toward ending energy poverty, Bboxx Nigeria has secured access to a $300 million fund under the World Bank-supported Nigeria Electrification Project, positioning itself to bring solar power to 90 million Nigerians still living without reliable electricity.
The deal, implemented through the Rural Electrification Agency’s Stand-Alone Solar (SAS) initiative, is set to be a game-changer for rural households and small businesses across the country. With over 40 percent of Nigeria’s population currently off the national grid, the funding will catalyze a major expansion of off-grid solar systems and energy-efficient appliances.
“We are thrilled to leverage this funding to expand solar electricity and appliance adoption, targeting the 90 million Nigerians currently without access to reliable power,” said the Managing Director of Bboxx Nigeria.
The company, which serves more than 3.6 million people across 10 African countries, combines digital innovation with consumer financing to deliver scalable clean energy solutions. Its approach aligns with 11 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and represents a growing trend of private-sector-led energy solutions in emerging markets.
This latest capital injection strengthens Bboxx’s footprint in Nigeria and builds on its participation in a $75 million Rural Electrification Agency program in 2022. It also follows the company’s 2022 acquisition of PEG Africa, further deepening its capabilities in last-mile solar delivery.
The Nigeria Electrification Project is one of the world’s most ambitious rural energy programs, blending public investment with private sector innovation. With solar energy now seen as a viable long-term solution to Nigeria’s chronic power deficits, Bboxx’s involvement reinforces the growing confidence in decentralized, renewable energy to transform the nation’s energy future.
As Nigeria races to meet its electrification targets, partnerships like these may be the key to lighting up the lives and livelihoods of millions.
