The Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) has unveiled an ambitious plan to drive sustainability, innovation, and safety in the country’s petroleum downstream sector, as outlined in its newly released 2025 Sustainability Report.

The report, which charts a five-year roadmap from 2023 to 2027, focuses on reducing carbon emissions, deploying cleaner fuels, and embracing technologies such as solar energy, compressed natural gas (CNG), and electric vehicles (EVs). Formerly known as the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN), MEMAN’s new approach reflects its evolving identity and growing commitment to climate and social responsibility.

As part of the strategy, 398 retail stations operated by MEMAN members across the country have been fitted with solar energy systems. This is aimed at cutting both emissions and electricity costs. In addition, NNPC Retail, a member company, has rolled out 500 CNG-powered fuel trucks equipped with safety enhancements including alcohol locks, driver-alertness cameras, and vapour control systems.

“The transition to cleaner energy is not optional; it’s essential,” said MEMAN CEO, Mr. Clement Isong. “We are not just building an energy system, we are shaping a society.”

The association is also promoting the use of ethanol-blended fuels such as E10, in line with global trends in clean fuel adoption. In a further push for clean domestic energy, MEMAN has launched an awareness campaign to encourage Nigerians to shift from firewood and charcoal to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Over 550 cylinders were distributed during outreach efforts in Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Ondo, and Borno states, where residents were educated on the health and environmental benefits of LPG.

The plan also includes investments in electric mobility, with MEMAN preparing to install EV charging stations at select member locations. This move is seen as part of a broader shift towards low-emission transport systems in the country.

On safety, MEMAN is strengthening its Health, Safety, Security, Environment, and Quality (HSSEQ) policy across member operations. Recent initiatives include spill-prevention systems at depots and advanced training for fuel truck drivers. A major emergency response simulation dubbed the MEMAN Cluster Drill was conducted in Apapa, Lagos, involving the Nigerian Navy and the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA).

To build capacity for future energy leaders, MEMAN has also rolled out a Youth Engagement Programme in collaboration with the Competency Centre. The programme currently operates at Yaba College of Technology and the University of Lagos, offering hands-on workshops and mentorships in digital technology, environmental science, and renewable energy.

Beyond energy, MEMAN members are actively involved in community development. MRS Oil Nigeria adopted Oduduwa Senior Secondary School in Lagos, renovating classrooms and providing learning materials. TotalEnergies, another member company, is running the LEAD Career Project, which has trained more than 1,800 students in leadership and eco-friendly practices. Conoil has also supported various cultural and infrastructure projects.

In Lagos’s Victoria Island, MEMAN is tackling environmental pollution through its Flood Management Initiative. The programme addresses open defecation, waste dumping, and oil spills in Bishop Kale Close.

Internally, the association is focusing on governance and diversity. MEMAN upholds a strong leadership code, promotes transparency, and supports the 30% Club gender target for women in leadership. It is also adopting flexible work policies and mentoring initiatives to create a more inclusive workplace.

MEMAN’s strategy aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including affordable clean energy, decent work, and climate action. The association is also working closely with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority through the Industry Sustainability Initiative (NISI), which could help attract more than $575 billion in clean energy investment into Nigeria.
