In a major boost to Ethiopia’s ambitions of becoming East Africa’s logistics hub, President Taye Atske Selassie and Russian presidential advisor Igor Levitin have agreed to accelerate joint efforts on transport infrastructure development.

The high-level meeting, held in Moscow during Russia’s 80th anniversary celebrations of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, marked a turning point in the two countries’ economic engagement, signaling a pivot from diplomatic dialogue to practical collaboration.

Ethiopia is one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa. Logistics and transportation are at the heart of our national and regional integration goals,” President Taye declared. 

With Ethiopia emerging as one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies, modern and efficient transport networks are seen as critical to unlocking regional integration and economic expansion. The president emphasized that Ethiopia is ready to partner with Russia to deliver transport solutions that go beyond national borders and serve the entire Horn of Africa.

Igor Levitin, speaking on behalf of the Kremlin, echoed this vision. “Ethiopia is a key partner for Russia on the continent. We are keen to support your infrastructure ambitions and to collaborate on transport initiatives that benefit the wider region.”

Levitin pointed to Russia’s extensive experience in logistics and transportation, particularly in challenging terrains, as a key asset it brings to the partnership.

The agreement is part of a broader realignment of global trade partnerships, with Russia deepening ties in Africa amid shifting geopolitical dynamics. For Ethiopia, the collaboration promises not just infrastructure investment but also knowledge transfer and regional influence.
