In a historic nod to Nollywood’s rising global influence, celebrated Nigerian actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has been spotlighted by The Hollywood Reporter as one of the Most Influential Women in International Film, a prestigious honor that places her among 46 trailblazing women reshaping the global cinematic landscape.

The announcement, made on Friday, May 9, marks a defining moment in Akindele’s illustrious career. Known for her blockbuster hits like Omo Ghetto: The Saga and A Tribe Called Judah, as well as the iconic TV series Jenifa’s Diary, Akindele’s inclusion on the global list reinforces her status not just as a Nollywood powerhouse but as a filmmaker with global relevance and reach.

Taking to Instagram to celebrate the achievement, Akindele wrote:

“I’m deeply honoured and truly grateful to be featured in The Hollywood Reporter’s ‘The Most Influential Women in International Film. To be recognised among 46 powerful, visionary women from around the world is more than a moment of celebration—it’s a call to keep building, creating boldly, and lifting others as we rise.”

Her words reflect a vision that goes beyond personal success, a commitment to empowering others, and a desire to expand the creative boundaries of African cinema.

In a gesture of solidarity and admiration, Akindele also celebrated Mo Abudu, a fellow Nigerian honoree, a media mogul, and a leading voice in African storytelling.

“A heartfelt congratulations to Aunty MO @moabudu, who has also been featured in this great piece. Thank you so much, Ma, for your invaluable contribution to the creative industry. It’s an honor to be featured alongside someone who has been such a powerful source of inspiration,” she added.

Akindele’s recognition comes at a time when Nigerian cinema is gaining international acclaim, and her inclusion amplifies the voices of African women leading a new era in global film.
