Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Ghana's Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation
In a bold move to reshape Ghana’s extractive industry through innovation and sustainability, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, is set to headline the Mining in Motion 2025 Summit, positioning Ghana as a leader in responsible mineral governance.
The summit, hosted under the Ashanti Green Initiative and supported by the World Bank and the World Gold Council, will convene key players from government, academia, civil society, and the private sector to chart a sustainable path forward for the global mining industry.
The participation of Hon. Muhammed is seen as a strong statement of Ghana’s determination to modernize its mining sector while safeguarding the environment.
With gold exports generating $11.6 billion in 2024, representing 57% of the nation’s total export revenue, mining remains a pillar of Ghana’s economy. But Hon. Muhammed is championing a new approach: one that fuses economic growth with environmental stewardship and scientific advancement.
In line with his vision, the Ministry is leading several groundbreaking initiatives. Among them is the Ghana Landscape Restoration and Small-Scale Mining Project, a World Bank-funded program aimed at reversing land degradation and supporting responsible practices among artisanal miners.
The Minister is also facilitating international cooperation. In April 2025, he met with Park Kyongsig, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Ghana, to explore joint action on climate change and ecosystem restoration. Discussions focused on leveraging South Korea’s technological expertise to reclaim rivers and lands affected by illegal mining.
At home, innovation is taking center stage. The Minerals Commission is integrating drone technology and other digital tools to automate and monitor mining operations, preparing a new generation of skilled workers for a rapidly evolving industry.
During the summit, Hon. Muhammed will join global thought leaders to share Ghana’s experience and push for science-based, inclusive policies in mineral resource governance. His presence signals Ghana’s emerging role as a thought leader in sustainable mining on the African continent and beyond.
The Mining in Motion 2025 Summit is organized by Energy Capital & Power in partnership with the Ashanti Green Initiative, under the leadership of Oheneba Kwaku Duah, Prince of the Ashanti Kingdom.
