In a groundbreaking move to combat South Africa’s persistent energy crisis, independent power producer Globeleq has partnered with China-based technology giant Sungrow to deliver Africa’s largest standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

The 153MW/612MWh Red Sands project, valued at approximately USD 300 million, is set to transform the nation’s energy landscape by stabilising the grid and supporting renewable energy integration.

Situated in the Northern Cape, 100 kilometres southeast of Upington, the Red Sands project will play a critical role in South Africa’s first Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.

By leveraging load shifting and grid balancing capabilities, the system will help bridge the gap between electricity supply and demand, a long-standing challenge in the country’s energy infrastructure.

Sungrow will supply its cutting-edge PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled energy storage solution for the project and provide 15 years of operations and maintenance services, ensuring long-term efficiency and reliability. Globeleq chose Sungrow for its advanced technology and proven expertise in utility-scale energy solutions.

Construction is set to commence following financial closure later this year, with full commissioning expected by 2027. Occupying approximately five hectares of land, the system will connect to the national grid through the Eskom Garona substation.

This marks Globeleq’s first major battery storage initiative in South Africa, adding to its portfolio of eight operational renewable energy plants in the country and nearly 1,800MW of generation capacity across seven African nations. Backed by British International Investment and Norfund, Globeleq continues to expand its leadership in Africa’s clean energy transition.

The Red Sands project represents more than just a technological milestone; it’s a bold commitment to energy resilience, sustainability, and innovation for Africa’s future.
