In a bold step toward transforming Kenya’s agricultural landscape, the government has thrown its weight behind a landmark Sh12.4 billion initiative by Heifer International aimed at empowering over 625,000 smallholder farmers through climate-smart, market-driven agriculture.
Unveiled in Nairobi, the Practice for Change (P4C) Signature Program is a five-year intervention designed to uplift rural communities by enhancing productivity in key value chains such as poultry, dairy, beef, and horticulture. The program is also strategically targeting arid and semi-arid regions, tapping into their underutilized livestock potential.
Speaking during the launch, Dr. Christopher Wanga, Director of Livestock Policy, hailed the initiative as a catalyst for structural change within the agricultural sector.
“This is more than a program launch, it’s a call to action for structural transformation of the agricultural sector,” said Wanga.
With an investment of $95.7 million, P4C is poised to drive inclusive and resilient agri-enterprises, with a strong focus on women and youth groups often sidelined in traditional agricultural development.
Heifer International CEO Surita Sandosham underscored the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration, emphasizing the importance of partnerships in driving sustainable impact.
To ensure long-term sustainability, the government is concurrently developing a National Livestock Master Plan that will guide investment decisions and policy direction in the livestock sector.
The P4C program is not just an investment it’s a bold vision to reimagine rural prosperity, restore dignity to farming, and build climate resilience from the ground up.
