In a bold stride toward energy independence and national prosperity, the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) and global seismic data giant TGS NOPEC have deepened their long-standing strategic alliance positioning Liberia as West Africa’s next energy powerhouse.
Presenting a landmark progress report at the Executive Mansion, Acting NOCAL CEO Fabian Lai detailed the transformative results of the 23-year partnership, which he described as a “model for equitable resource development and national empowerment.” The report, shared before President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, key cabinet officials, and energy stakeholders, revealed the scale and depth of the collaboration’s impact from advanced seismic exploration to life-changing community investments.
Under the partnership, over 15,000 square kilometers of Liberia’s offshore territory have been mapped using cutting-edge 2D and 3D seismic surveys. This initiative has unlocked significant potential in the country’s energy reserves, drawing the attention of international supermajors and independent oil companies alike.
President Boakai praised the partnership’s contributions to national development but called on TGS NOPEC to scale up its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts especially as Liberia navigates reduced foreign aid support.
He instructed his administration to engage TGS NOPEC in discussions to increase CSR commitments and explore new avenues of collaboration.
Capacity building remains central to the partnership. NOCAL and TGS NOPEC have launched initiatives aimed at educating and training Liberian talent both locally and internationally laying the groundwork for a future where Liberians lead in their own energy sector.
Lai unveiled future plans, including executive allocations to attract more investors, conducting new onshore geological studies, and a feasibility study to establish a shore base to support offshore operations expected to generate jobs and stimulate local economies.
As Liberia charges forward into an energy-driven future, the NOCAL–TGS NOPEC partnership stands as a beacon of how responsible corporate alliances can ignite national transformation.
