In a game-changing leap toward technological modernization, Libya has officially joined Europe’s high-speed data grid by activating the Medusa submarine cable. This 8,700-kilometre undersea powerhouse repositions the North African nation as a digital bridge between continents.

Launched under the stewardship of the Libyan Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology Company (LPTIC), the Medusa cable is more than a telecom milestone; it signals Libya’s ambition to become a digital leader in the region. Connecting Tripoli, Misrata, and Benghazi directly to major European internet hubs, the cable lays the groundwork for lightning-fast connectivity and next-generation digital services.

“This is a gateway to a new Libya,” said an LPTIC spokesperson. The project is expected to unlock a wave of innovation from high-speed 5G rollouts to advanced data center infrastructures and cloud technology ecosystems. By connecting Libya to key global internet exchanges, the Medusa cable strengthens the country’s place in the international digital economy.

But the cable’s promise goes deeper than data speed. It’s a strategic investment in national stability and economic revitalization. Enhanced digital infrastructure will allow government institutions to streamline services, digitize records, and improve data governance, bringing citizens closer to a modern, transparent, and efficient public sector.

As the cable anchors Libya into the heart of Europe’s digital artery, the nation stands on the cusp of a transformation powered by connectivity, driven by innovation, and aimed at securing its place in the 21st-century global order.
