Morocco’s national futsal team sent a clear message to the world, as they are no longer underdogs they are contenders. In a thrilling final match on Sunday, the Atlas Lions roared to a stunning 6-3 victory over world number three Portugal to win the international friendly tournament held at the Mohammed VI Complex.

Star striker Ismail Amazzal delivered a masterclass performance, scoring a sensational hat-trick that left the Portuguese defense scrambling. Supporting him were Soufiane Charraoui, Othman Idrissi, and Anass Dahani, each adding a goal to seal Morocco’s statement win against the reigning 2021 world champions.

“I’m very happy with this first-ever win against Portugal, who are ranked third in the world,” said head coach Hicham Dguig in a post-match interview with Moroccan sports channel Arriyadia.

Morocco’s journey through the tournament was marked by dominance and flair. They opened with a crushing 8-0 win over China, while Portugal had edged past Afghanistan 3-1. But it was the final that drew global attention, with Morocco showcasing electric pace, cohesive teamwork, and clinical finishing.

“This tournament is important for improving our FIFA ranking. Even though it is a friendly tournament, we want to give it an international value,” Dguig emphasized.

That effort has already paid off. Morocco climbed to sixth in the latest FIFA world futsal rankings, overtaking Kazakhstan and further solidifying their position as Africa’s futsal powerhouse.

Beyond the trophy, Morocco’s win sends a powerful signal ahead of future international competitions. By defeating one of the world’s best, the Atlas Lions have made it clear they are no longer chasing greatness. They are part of it.
