Mozambique has taken a bold step toward reshaping the energy dynamics of southern Africa, unveiling two major energy partnerships with Zambia and Zimbabwe that position the country as a central energy hub for the region.

Formalized during the 11th Mining and Energy Conference in Maputo, the newly signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) go beyond technical cooperation; they reflect a strategic drive toward deeper regional integration, economic revitalisation, and long-term energy security.

Mozambique’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Estevão Pale, described the agreements as emblematic of a broader regional vision. “These MoUs represent a joint vision of interdependence and shared progress. Mozambique thus strengthens its geostrategic position as a SADC energy corridor, contributing to regional energy security and the balance of our trade balance through energy exports,” he said.

The MoU with Zambia paves the way for a transformative gas pipeline project connecting the port city of Beira to Ndola. Designed to transport up to 3.5 million metric tonnes of petroleum products annually, the pipeline is expected to dramatically enhance Zambia’s fuel supply chain while stimulating industrial activity around Mozambique’s Beira terminal.

In parallel, the agreement with Zimbabwe focuses on strengthening cross-border electricity collaboration. It includes plans to scale up power generation, modernise transmission systems, and facilitate the flow of fuel and energy infrastructure between the two nations.

The deal supports Zimbabwe’s push for industrial growth while deepening energy integration within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

With these strategic moves, Mozambique is not just exporting fuel, it is exporting stability, efficiency, and a new vision for regional cooperation in a continent hungry for energy solutions.
