In a bold move to strengthen its presence on the continent and deepen its impact, the World Bank has appointed Ndiamé Diop as the new Vice President for Eastern and Southern Africa, effective today. Diop, a seasoned economist with over 25 years of global experience, is set to oversee a transformative $76 billion regional portfolio spanning 26 countries all from his new base in Nairobi.

His appointment comes at a critical time for a region grappling with complex development challenges, from job scarcity and fragile health systems to digital gaps and persistent poverty. But Diop is no stranger to turning ambitious visions into tangible results. 

During his tenure as Country Director for Nigeria, he managed the World Bank’s largest African portfolio of $17 billion and spearheaded major reforms in broadband connectivity, agribusiness, and economic policy significantly accelerating growth.

Now, with a mandate to deepen regional integration and build more resilient communities, Diop is expected to champion inclusive development by focusing on priority areas such as education, energy access, water and sanitation, health, and conflict mitigation.

Diop who holds a PhD in Economics and has published widely on macroeconomic and fiscal issues. Fluent in French, English, and Wolof and conversant in Arabic and Bahasa Diop brings both a global and deeply rooted African perspective to the role.

He succeeds Victoria Kwakwa, who retired on March 31, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of impactful leadership.

As the World Bank positions itself closer to its African partners, all eyes will be on Diop to steer the region toward a more inclusive, connected, and prosperous future.
