In a bold push to end Nigeria’s heavy reliance on food imports and unlock its agricultural potential, Nigeria and Brazil have sealed a landmark $1 billion partnership to overhaul the nation’s agriculture sector.

The agreement, signed during the 2nd Nigeria–Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, will channel over $1 billion into providing modern mechanised farming equipment, establishing service centres, and offering technical training across Nigeria.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who hosted Brazil’s Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, described the pact as a pivotal step towards lifting Nigeria from subsistence farming to large-scale agricultural productivity.

“Brazil and Nigeria are not bound by geography, but by a shared dream,” Shettima said. “Two large, diverse democracies. Two nations with the right to dream and the ability to build.”

The initiative, driven under the banner of the Green Imperative, aims to boost food production, create jobs, and advance Nigeria’s broader economic reforms across energy, education, and public finance.

Brazil’s Vice President Alckmin hailed the cooperation as a powerful example of South-South collaboration, saying, “It’s a great pleasure to see the significant progress. We are committed to building partnerships that deliver real, impactful results.”

Nigeria’s ambition, Shettima added, is to lay the foundation for a $1 trillion economy by 2030, with agriculture serving as a cornerstone of that vision.

The deal marks a renewed chapter in Brazil–Nigeria relations, underscoring shared democratic values and a joint commitment to harnessing natural and human capital for sustainable development.
