The Super Falcons of Nigeria delivered a thrilling second-half comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 and claim a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title on Saturday night in Rabat.

Trailing 0-2 at halftime, the Nigerian women showed resilience and a champion's mentality, dramatically turning the tide against the Atlas Lionesses, who had taken an early control of the final. Ghizlane Chebbak opened scoring in the 12th minute, before Sanaâ Mssoudy doubled Morocco’s lead in the 24th minute.

Esther Okoronkwo reignited hope in the 56th minute, calmly converting a penalty that signaled the start of Nigeria’s resurgence. The Super Falcons pushed forward with intensity and found the equalizer in the 71st minute through Folasade Ijamilusi, who tapped in a brilliant cross from Okoronkwo.

As the clock ticked down, it was Jennifer Echegini who sealed Nigeria’s historic win with a well-taken goal in the 88th minute, completing a sensational turnaround that silenced the home crowd and stunned the host nation.

With this victory, Nigeria’s Super Falcons now boast a remarkable 10 WAFCON titles, underlining their dominance in African women’s football. The team previously lifted the trophy in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.

Elsewhere in the tournament, the Black Queens of Ghana clinched third place after defeating defending champions South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in a penalty shootout on Friday.

In response to the Falcons’ heroic feat, Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu congratulated the team during a video call shortly after the match. He commended the players, coaches, and management for their exceptional performance and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to celebrating their success.

“You will be celebrated,” the President told team captain Rasheedat Ajibade and her teammates. “To set the record of victories for the 10th time is not a small feat for the country and the continent as a whole. Safe journey back home, enjoy yourselves, and avoid injuries.”

President Tinubu also acknowledged the team’s dedication in a separate statement, as conveyed through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

“The Super Falcons’ spectacular performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit,” the statement read.

With their latest triumph, the Super Falcons have not only written another chapter in their rich legacy but also reaffirmed Nigeria’s dominance in women’s football on the continent.
