Somalia and Azerbaijan have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen bilateral cooperation in agricultural development, marking a significant step toward modernizing Somalia’s agricultural sector. The agreement was formalized in Baku on Monday between Somalia’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mohamed Abdi Hayir (Maareeye), and Azerbaijan’s Minister of Agriculture, Majnun Mammadov.
The MoU outlines collaboration in agricultural investment, modern irrigation and electrification techniques, joint research initiatives, and support for agri-businesses. This partnership aligns with Somalia’s strategy to bolster domestic food production by integrating advanced technologies and international expertise, addressing longstanding challenges in food security and sustainable farming.
During the visit, Minister Hayir and his delegation toured Azerbaijan’s leading agricultural research centers, including institutions specializing in soil science and agricultural chemistry. Azerbaijan, recognized as a regional leader in agricultural innovation, is poised to play a pivotal role in transforming Somalia’s agricultural landscape through knowledge exchange and technological advancements.
Diplomatic relations between Somalia and Azerbaijan have deepened in recent years, driven by mutual interests in economic and technological cooperation. Somalia aims to rebuild its agricultural sector, which has been hampered by years of conflict and climate challenges, while Azerbaijan leverages its expertise in agricultural technology to foster international partnerships.
The agreement supports Somalia’s broader goals of enhancing food security, attracting foreign investment, and promoting sustainable farming practices. Advanced irrigation systems and research-driven solutions are expected to be key focus areas, enabling Somalia to improve productivity and resilience in its agricultural sector.
This partnership underscores both nations’ commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability in agriculture, with potential to serve as a model for regional cooperation. As Somalia continues to prioritize agricultural development, the collaboration with Azerbaijan is expected to yield significant advancements in food production and economic growth.
