Spiro officially launches zero-emission electric motorcycles
Tanzania’s bustling motorcycle taxi industry is on the brink of a green transformation as e-mobility giant Spiro officially launches its operations in Dar es Salaam. With the introduction of zero-emission electric motorcycles, thousands of boda boda riders could soon swap fuel pumps for battery swap stations and pocket savings of up to Sh60,000 a month.
Speaking at the launch, Spiro’s Managing Director for Kenya and Tanzania, Kshitij Sharma, highlighted Tanzania as a strategic market, citing its large and growing population of motorcycle taxi operators.
Unlike traditional petrol-powered bikes, Spiro’s electric motorcycles are built for sustainability and convenience. Each unit comes equipped with a battery-swap feature that eliminates the need for lengthy charging waits.
Riders can simply swap depleted batteries at one of Spiro’s strategically placed swap stations already operating in key areas such as Kariakoo, Mbagala, Gongo la Mboto, Kigamboni, and Bonyokwa’s Total petrol station.
A single battery offers a range of 100 to 120 kilometres, enough for most daily operations. Combined with minimal maintenance requirements, electric motorcycles are expected to revolutionize operational efficiency in the sector.
Beyond savings, the shift to electric transport offers environmental benefits. With zero emissions, the new bikes promise cleaner air in Dar es Salaam and other urban centres heavily burdened by pollution from fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
As more swap stations and bikes hit the roads, Spiro’s move signals not just a business expansion but a pivotal step toward sustainable mobility in Tanzania.
