In a bold stride toward energy independence, Zambia has sealed a $1.1 billion agreement to construct a state-of-the-art crude oil refinery and energy complex in Ndola, Copperbelt Province, a development poised to reshape the country’s energy landscape and regional trade positioning.

Once completed, the facility will process up to 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day, meeting Zambia’s current fuel needs and paving the way for future exports across Southern Africa.

This ambitious project is expected to significantly reduce the nation’s reliance on imported fuel, which has long strained the country's foreign reserves and exposed the economy to global price fluctuations. Government officials project that the refinery will save the country millions of dollars annually, while creating thousands of local jobs during construction and operation.

While the names of investors and a detailed construction timeline are yet to be revealed, authorities have confirmed that the deal aligns with Zambia’s broader economic transformation agenda, with focus areas including industrialisation, regional integration, and sustainable development.

The project also marks a significant vote of confidence in Zambia’s investment climate, sending a strong signal to the global energy and infrastructure sectors.
